Lady Warriors Fall to Bruins in Bellevue Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Midland University faced (RV) Bellevue University on Friday afternoon and fell by a score of 78-69. The Warriors fall to 1-3 on the year while the Bruins improve to 4-1 overall.

Three players scored in double-figures with senior Amanda Hansen contributing a team-best 13 points. Freshman Erin Prusa contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Lexis Haase scored 10 points to go along with five rebounds. Midland shot 34.3 percent (24-of-70) from the field compared to 49.1 percent (27-of-55) for Bellevue. The Bruins held a 44-39 edge in rebounds while the Warriors had 11 steals compared to four from the Bruins.

Bellevue got on the board first before a three-pointer from Hansen gave Midland to 3-2 lead with 8:47 on the clock. The teams would trade points through much of the first quarter before back-to-back layups from Prusa gave the Warriors a 14-13 lead with two minutes remaining. It would be Prusa again to bring give Midland the 19-13 lead at the end of the quarter.

A layup from junior Katy Gathje extended the Midland lead to 26-18 with 7:36 to go in the second quarter. The Bruins continued to chip away at the lead and scored the final seven points of the half to tie things up at 37-37 going into the break.

Hansen dropped in a layup to open the third quarter and give her team the 39-37 lead early. The Bruins would go on an 11-4 run before a layup from senior Maddie Meadows saw Midland trailing 48-45 with 5:50 on the clock. Bellevue would score eight-straight, but Midland responded with a three-pointer from Sam Shepard to train 56-49 with two minutes to go. The scoring was minimal in the final minutes of the third quarter as the score stood at 59-49 with the Warriors trailing going into the ten minutes of play.

Bellevue saw its largest lead of the night as a three-pointer brought the score to 70-52 with six minutes to go. The Warriors pulled within seven after a layup from sophomore Casey Thompson had Midland trailing 74-67 with :40 on the clock. The Bruins would hold on to the lead as time expired as the Warriors fell by a score of 78-69.

The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, November 8 as they face (RV) Bethany College to kick off the Tabor College Classic in Hillsboro, Kansas.
