FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University women’s tennis team lost its first Great Plains Athletic Conference match of the season Sunday, falling to the College of Saint Mary 3-6 at the Fremont High School courts. The Lady Warriors are 3-1 in conference play and 9-8 overall.
“We came out a little sluggish at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles,” Coach John Steinke said. “We needed one of those matches to go our way. Our No. 3 team of Danielle Martin and Carolyn Howton came out firing; they played a really great match.”
Martin and Howton won their match 8-0. Martin also picked up one of Midland’s two victories in singles, winning the No 6 singles contest 6-1, 6-0. Christina Villarreal scored the Lady Warriors’ other victory at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2.
“We have a big week with three matches,” Steinke said. “We will continue to work hard and be ready to play them the next opportunity we get.”
The Lady Warriors travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to face Morningside College on Tuesday and then Yankton, South Dakota, to play Mount Marty on Thursday. Midland wraps up the regular season by hosting Hastings College – the current GPAC leader at 4-0 – at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Fremont High School courts.
