FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University volleyball officially released their 2018 schedule. This year’s schedule features matches against three of last year’s NAIA National Semifinalists and a total of then matches with teams in last year’s final coaches’ poll. The Lady Warriors will play ten home matches inside Wikert Event Center, where they averaged over 1,000 fans each match.
Midland, who annually plays one of the toughest schedules, will open the 2018 campaign with a stacked four team tournament in Springfield, Missouri on August 16th-17th. They’ll face No. 3 Viterbo and No. 4 Missouri Baptist as well as host Evangel. Last season Midland spent the entire year ranked in the top 15, finishing the year ranked No. 13 in the final coaches’ poll.
“We are very excited about our 2018 schedule,” head coach Paul Giesselmann said. “Players come to Midland to be challenged, to reach their full potential, and this year’s schedule will certainly do that. Being able to open the season against two final four teams is exciting for our players and will certainly help prepare our team for the rest of the season.”
The Warriors’ home opener will be Wednesday, August 22nd versus Peru State at 7:00 p.m.
“Our fans have come to expect great volleyball and they will see some great matches on our home court,” Giesselmann added.
In addition to the opening weekend tournament, Midland will travel to Chicago, Illinois for the SXU/TCC Crossover Tournament on August 24th-25th and play a pair of games in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic on August 31st and September 1st.
The Warriors open up Great Plains Athletic Conference play on September 5th with a home match with Morningside.
They will also host Mount Marty, No. 9 Hastings, No. 2 Dordt, Briar Cliff, (RV) Doane, College of Saint Mary, and Concordia in GPAC play.
The GPAC Postseason Tournament is scheduled for November 3-10 with the NAIA National Championship set for November 27th-December 1st in Sioux City, Iowa.
This year’s team will look to make its sixth straight appearance at the national tournament and will be led by three-time All-Americans Jessica Peters and Priscilla O’Dowd. Last year the Lady Warriors finished 21-11, reaching the GPAC tournament semifinals as well as advancing to the round of 16 at the national tournament.
