Husker Update: Soccer, Bowling, Golf

The Nebraska soccer team (2-5-2, 1-1-0 Big Ten) hosts a pair of conference foes this week when Northwestern and Illinois visit Hibner Stadium.

The Huskers and Wildcats (2-5-1, 0-1-0 Big Ten) square off Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) on the Big Ten Network. Dean Linke and Jackie Manny will call the action on BTN. The first 500 fans into the game will get a soccer scarf, and after the game, fans can enjoy a fireworks show.

On Sunday, Nebraska hosts Illinois (7-1-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten), starting at 1:05 p.m. Fans are welcome to bring their dogs to the match as part of “Pups at the Pitch,” which features a Husker dog leash giveaway for the first 250 fans. The match will be streamed live on BTN+ with a subscription required to watch.

One of the greatest collegiate bowlers in history will be returning to Nebraska, as three-time National Collegiate Bowler of the Year Shannon Pluhowsky will rejoin the Huskers as an assistant coach for the 2019-20 season, Nebraska Head Coach Paul Klempa announced on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Pluhowsky, who won back-to-back National Bowler-of-the-Year honors in 2004 and 2005 while leading Nebraska to the first two NCAA titles in history, earned her first Bowler-of-the-Year award as a Husker freshmen in 2001, when she was also named the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) Rookie of the Year. She was a first-team All-American again in 2002, before taking a redshirt year in 2003.

A four-time National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-American, Pluhowsky has gone on to an impressive professional and international career. She was also a member of the inaugural induction class into the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

Megan Whittaker played solid golf for the second straight day to lead the Nebraska women’s golf team in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo., on Tuesday.

Whittaker, a sophomore from Elkhorn, Neb., carded a two-over-par 74 with 13 pars, two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey to complete the first 36 holes at 146 (+2). Whittaker heads into the final day at the Red Sky Golf Club in a tie for 23rd individually.

The Huskers complete the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 10:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start on Wednesday.
