Husker Update: Golf, Basketball, Baseball, Softball – Feb 24

Golf

Kate Smith fired rounds of 65 and 66 to tie her own Nebraska record for the best 36-hole score in school history with a 13-under-par 131 through the first two rounds of the Westbrook Spring Invitational at the Vistas Course on Sunday afternoon.
Smith’s spectacular performance matched the 131 she shot at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in 2018. Her 65 (-7) in Sunday’s opening round was the second-best individual round in school history, trailing only her opening-round 64 at the Westbrook Village Golf Club in 2018.
The final 18 holes at the Westbrook Spring Invitational are scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Men’s Basketball

The Nebraska men’s basketball team goes on the road for a rare Monday night game, as the Huskers travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Tipoff at the State Farm Center is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Big Dog Country 98.9 FM and 1340 AM with the Husker Sports Network.

Women’s Basketball

Sophomore Leigha Brown scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in a explosive first half as the Nebraska women’s basketball team rolled to an 80-58 win over Illinois on Senior Day at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Fellow sophomore Ashtyn Veerbeek added a season-high 15 points to help the Huskers score a Big Ten season-best 80 points, including a season-high 56 in the first half. With the victory, Nebraska improved to 17-11 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten. Illinois slipped to 11-16 overall and 2-14 in the conference.
Nebraska will close Big Ten regular-season action at No. 24 Indiana on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. (CT) in Bloomington, Ind.,

Baseball

The Nebraska baseball team (1-5) fell to Arizona, 3-2, at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as Blake Paugh hit two home runs and drove in all three runs for the Wildcats.
NU was held to three hits as a team, as Cam ChickTy Roseberry and Leighton Banjoff each managed one hit apiece for the Big Red.
The Huskers return to action next weekend for a three-game series against Arizona State in Phoenix, Ariz., starting on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (CT).

Softball

Despite battling, Nebraska (6-8) came up just short against No. 7 Florida (16-2), falling 6-3 on Sunday in the final game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Nebraska had several opportunities to make some noise, scoring the first run and hitting the only home run of the game. However, NU surrendered one unearned run and left two runners on third to give the Gators the edge. Tristen Edwards went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer. Cam Ybarra hit her first triple as a Husker and Samantha Owen also had one hit.
The Huskers are back in action on Feb. 29 when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on Missouri. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
