GPAC Names Softball All-Conference Team, Including Six Midland Warriors

he Great Plains Athletic Conference announced the 2019 Softball All-Conference team on Wednesday, as voted on by the league coaches. Midland University had six players named to the various teams and also swept the individual awards.

Junior designated player/catcher Katlin Anders was named the GPAC Player of the Year while senior Jaylee Hinrichs was named GPAC Pitcher of the Year. The duo helped lead Midland to a share of the regular season conference title and an NAIA Opening Round bid for the second straight season.

Joining Anders and Hinrichs on the first team were juniors Sierra Athow and Bobbi Singleton. Athow was selected as an infielder while Singleton earned one of the outfield spots.

The Warriors had two players earn honorable mention, junior infielder Angela Brazil and sophomore outfielder Andrea Cespedes. Brazil started every game for the Warriors, playing third base. Cespedes spent most of her time manning centerfield for Midland, starting 40 of 41 games.

Joining the players on the field in getting recognition was head coach Mike Heard. He was named GPAC Coach of the Year, as voted on by his peers, for the second consecutive season. So far this season the Warriors have gone 31-10 and were 18-4 in conference play. They were co-champions during the regular season along with Morningside. The Warriros earned the top-seed and with it one of the GPAC’s automatic bids to the NAIA Postseason Tournament.

Midland will begin postseason play at the NAIA Opening Round in Springfield, Missouri on Monday, May 13. They’ll take on Baker University at 11:00 a.m. in the first round of the four-team double-elimination bracket. The other two teams are Marian University and Indiana University-Southeast.
