LINCOLN – Bergan came close to a win at State Baseball last night, but couldn’t close the deal. They fell 2-0 to Millard West and move into the elimination bracket today.
Preston Menicucci threw a shutout to lead Millard West past Archbishop Bergan 2-0 at Haymarket Park in Lincoln Tuesday night, but the pitching was strong on both sides. Menicucci struck out three, while Bergan’s Dillon Dix sat down five.
Millard West fired up the offense in the first inning. Max Anderson drove in two when he homered, in a thrilling hit that came within inches of being caught by Bergan’s outfielder. A single by Eli Herink in the first inning was a positive for Archbishop Bergan.
Menicucci earned the win for Millard West. He allowed four hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out three. Max Anderson, a Texas A & M recruit, had a long ball in the first inning, in addition to that homer. Millard West was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Ryan David made the most plays with 12.
On the Bergan side, Dillon Dix lasted six innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one. They went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Millard West in hits. Archbishop Bergan didn’t commit a single error in the field. Brennan Callahan had the most chances in the field with six.
