Legion – FSB Headed to State
The First State Bank American Legion Seniors baseball team staved off elimination for the second consecutive night, and qualified for State Tournament play by defeating Gretna, 5-3, last night at Pawnee Park in Columbus at the A-6 Area Tournament.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, First State scored four runs with two outs to take a 4-1 lead. First State added a run in the fifth to go up 5-1. After giving up two runs in the top of the sixth, relief pitcher Jackson Gilfry struck out Joe Weis looking on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to hold the lead. Austin Callahan came on in the seventh and held Gretna scoreless, to get the save. Dawson Glause was the winning pitcher, working 5.2 innings, giving up four hits. He worked around eight walks and struck out four. Gretna stranded 12 baserunners on the night. Gretna is 25-14 and plays Grand Island Home Federal at 4:00, this afternoon.
First State is 26-7 and plays the winner of the Gretna/GIHF game at 7:00PM tonight at Columbus’ Pawnee Park for the District Championship. Tonight’s game will be broadcast on Big Dog 98.9 FM and 1340 AM.
The Dodge County Baseball League Playoffs begin tonight. Wahoo hosts Dodge and West Point hosts Yutan. Both games begin at 7:30pm.
The Fremont Moo picked up another win at Moller Field last night, defeating Souris Valley, 11-6. Fremont is 24-25 on the season and will go for the three game sweep tonight at 6:35.
