FREMONT, Neb. – Hayden Bailey threw a complete game shutout on Monday afternoon to push Midland University into the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Championship game. The Warriors put up plenty of runs in support of their starter to defeat Mount Marty College 16-0 to win the Midland Bracket.
Bailey held the Lancers, the conference’s best hitting team, to just six hits in the complete game win. He struck out five and walked just three over the nine innings.
Offensively Midland got it going early as they plated two runs in the top of the 1st and then eight more in the 2nd to put the game out of reach. Armando Fajardo, who came back from an injury, hit a line drive to right field that scored the first two runs before the explosion of run in the 2nd.
In that inning five different Warriors got a hit, including two singles by Nolan Luzzi. Justin Trevino had a RBI single to start the scoring then was followed an RBI single by Tanner Bos, a two RBI double by Matt Abdelnour, RBI walks by Bryan Smith and James Kaiser and then Luzzi’s two RBI single.
For the game six players drove in multiple runs for Midland with Billy Brand leading the team with three RBI, all of which came on a home run in the 3rd inning.
“It was a complete team win today for our guys,” head coach Chad Miller commented. “Hayden pitched one heck of a game and has been big for us this year. We’ve been able to lean on our pitching staff this year while our hitting took some time to get going. Right now everyone’s bought into what we’re doing and it’s showing on the field with our play.”
Up next for Midland (32-19) is a championship matchup with regular-season champion Northwestern (29-18) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa. The Red Raiders won their bracket with an 11-8 victory over Morningside. With the top two seed in the championship game, the Warriors have clinched an automatic bid to the NAIA Opening Round for the fifth time in six years, three straight.
