Archbishop Bergan Claws Back, But Falls Just Short Against Millard South

LINCOLN – Despite a 4-run deficit in the third inning, Archbishop Bergan almost came all the way back, eventually falling 7-6 to Millard South on Thursday.

Archbishop Bergan scored four runs in the failed comeback on a triple by Eli Herink in the third, a single by Brody Sintek in the third, a single by Brennan Callahan in the third, and a single by Jackson Gilfry in the fifth. Archbishop Bergan was right in it until Millard South in the sixth inning.

Millard South got things moving in the second inning, when Mitchell Glause induced Matthew Guthmiller to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Archbishop Bergan tied things up at six. Gilfry drove in one when he singled. Archbishop Bergan put up five runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Sintek and Callahan and a triple by Herink.

Millard South scored three runs in the third inning. Millard South scored its runs on a single by Noah Greise. Braden Cannon was the winning pitcher for Millard South. He allowed three hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking zero. Jayden Payne threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Payne recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Millard South.

Dawson Glause took the loss for Archbishop Bergan. He allowed five hits and one run over four innings, striking out one. Glause started the game for Archbishop Bergan. He allowed eight hits and six runs over three innings, striking out two and none. Alexander Locum started the game for Millard South. He allowed seven hits and five runs over three innings, striking out three

Archbishop Bergan tallied ten hits in the game. Callahan and Austin Callahan all managed multiple hits for Archbishop Bergan. Callahan and Callahan each collected two hits to lead Archbishop Bergan.

Millard South collected 13 hits. Tremayne Mungin, Jarrett Novak, Tyson Gerdes, Greise, and Kutty George each collected multiple hits for Millard South.

Bergan finishes the season 16-6, while Millard South will move on to play Friday morning against Millard West in the Championship.  They will need to beat Millard West twice to take home the crown.
