Elkhorn’s Nicolle Barmettler defeated Beemer’s Lacie Fox, 8 and 7, in the Final of the 2018 Nebraska Women’s Match Play Championship at Yankee Hill Country Club in Lincoln. Barmettler, the No. 1 seed, made 12 birdies in 26 holes on Tuesday, but had one true birdie and a steady barrage of pars in the Final to win her first title. In the Non-Championship Division, winners of five flights were also were also decided. Fremont’s Maggie Peters (First Flight), Lincoln’s Jan Crouch (Second Flight), Lexington’s Brooke Speer (Third Flight), Bellevue’s Shelly Miratsky (Fourth Flight) and Norfolk’s Phyllis Hall (Fifth Flight) were all winners.
Fremont Golf Club will host the 110th Nebraska Amateur Championship July 26-29, the fifth straight decade the club has hosted. FGC last hosted in 2004, when Lincoln’s A.J. Elgert won a epic seven-hole playoff over Omaha’s Patrick Duffy. A full field of 156 players will compete, including eight past champions. The defending champion, Alex Schaake of Omaha, won by seven strokes last year for his second straight title, and will try to become the first since the great Bob Astleford to win three straight Nebraska Amateurs.
