FREMONT – Over 160 people will be a lot warmer this winter as a result of the Uniquely Your Stability Support (UYSS) coat drive and Warmer Winter coat giveaway.
Uniquely Yours Stability Support is a Fremont organization dedicated to homelessness prevention and recovery from recent homelessness, which they call “moving out” of homelessness. Many low income individuals can’t afford such basics as properly fitting winter coats, and are forced to choose between buying those basics and keeping their bills paid. Some families are just a few coats away from the slippery slope that can lead to losing their home.
The Warmer Winter coat giveaway hopes to stop this particular homelessness contributor in its tracks. UYSS collected approximately 400 items throughout August and September, and the need was apparent right away last Saturday.
“Families were waiting for us to open the doors,” said Robin Ritter, CEO of UYSS. “We opened early to get them out of the cold.” Last year, UYSS gave away 135 coats. This year, the organization gave away even more. “We gave out 131 coats, a large basket full of hats, gloves and scarves, along with several books during the 2+ hour event,” said Ritter. “This does not include the 22 coats we delivered to the Hope Center after the main event, for the youth that participates [in programs] there.” UYSS also delivered another 10 coats to a low income apartment in Fremont for their residents.
All those deliveries added up to a grand total of 163 coats given out through or after the event. If you or someone you know is still in need, UYSS can still help. “We still have a lot of coats that those in need can come when needed to get one,” explained Ritter. A single person can pick up coats & cold weather gear for the whole family, no questions asked.
