FREMONT – Many in Fremont were upset this weekend by a sign on the Fremont Mall’s Santa chair saying that Santa would no longer be at the Fremont Mall. On social media, rumors flew, suggesting the mall had ended the Santa visit program due to complaints from non-Christian religions.
This, however, is not true. According to Peter Jirous with DP Management, the company that manages the Fremont Mall, the reason is quite a bit more simple. “Santa got sick,” said Jirous. With an illness keeping Santa down, he could no longer play the part. “There is no truth to the rumor that Santa was let go for any religious related reason.”
Jirous says that they are looking for a replacement Santa at this time, and hope to have someone in the big man’s chair soon.
This weekend, this sign was spotted at Santa’s chair, and the lack of punctuation had visitors reading it as if complaints had been made by Mall shoppers to corporate. This is not the case. The sign intended to convey that the decision to suspend the Santa program was made at the DP Management, or corporate, level.
With proper punctuation added, the sign reads, “Christmas is canceled due to decion [sic] by corporate. Complaints? Please call: 402-493-2800.” The decision in question was to let the current, ill, Santa recuperate and skip appearances.
