Ice Suspected in Sunday Night Saunders County Fatality Accident

MEAD – A semi and two pickups were involved in a Sunday evening collision that ended in one fatality.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol responded to the scene of the fatality accident one and half miles west of Mead on Highway 92 at 7 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018.

A semi- tractor trailer driven by James T. Cooler age 53 of Smithland, Iowa was westbound on Highway 92.  An eastbound pickup truck lost control and was struck broadside.  The passenger in the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the Saunders County Medical Center. A third pickup truck was eastbound and collided with the first eastbound pickup which sustained only minor damage.

The passenger in the 2005 Ford F150 pickup was Peggy R. Havener age 52 of Fremont. She was pronounced dead at the Saunders County Medical Center.

Black ice is suspected, due to the recent winter storm and overall road conditions. Alcohol was not suspected as a contributing factor, and it is not known at this time if seatbelts were in use.
