Fremont Area Community Thanksgiving Celebrates 33rd Year

FREMONT – For over thirty years, Fremont area residents have had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious thanksgiving dinner surrounded by their friends, family, and neighbors – all absolutely free of charge.

Entering it’s 33rd official year, the Fremont Community Thanksgiving Dinner will once again feed anyone and everyone who comes to the Midland University Dining Hall on Thanksgiving day. Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and all the trimmings – plus dessert – will be on offer at the Midland University Dining Hall, all prepared by volunteers. Event organizer Pam Nielsen says the tradition was started nearly 40 years ago by one Fremont woman with a big heart.

“It began about 38 years ago with a lady by the name of Virginia Anderson. She invited a few people who didn’t have a place to go for Thanksgiving to her home,” said Nielsen. “From there it just kind of progressed,” with Virginia inviting more and more people to her annual dinners until it outsized her home, and had to be held at the City Auditorium. Through the years, the dinner continued to grow and eventually came to be held at its current home on the Midland University campus.

Over 1,000 people annually enjoy a meal at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, so volunteers are welcome – and very much needed. Just two years ago, the Community Thanksgiving was in danger of shutting down entirely due to a lack of volunteers.

This year, volunteers can show up at the Midland University Dining Hall at 940 E 9th Street anytime before, during or shortly after the dinner to help with preparing, serving and cleaning up. If you wish to help with cooking or set up, you can come to the dining hall from about 8:30AM on. The greatest need is for help cleaning up after the meal, according to Nielsen. “It’s no one’s favorite job, but we really need help after the meal is done to get everything clean and wrapped up.”

Whether you’re volunteering or coming down for dinner (or both!) everyone in the community is welcome at the Fremont Community Thanksgiving.
