FPD Passes Busy Memorial Day Weekend

FREMONT – Memorial Day weekend wasn’t all fun and relaxation for the Fremont Police Department, who responded to dozens of calls throughout the weekend and made three arrests and two serious citations over the holiday weekend.

In the overnight Friday-Saturday hours just after 2AM, police arrested one man at a hotel in the 1200 block of east 23rd street after receiving a report of an assault. Alejandro G. Mendoza-Cano, 38, of College Park, MD faces charges of 3rd Degree Domestic Assault and Strangulation after a physical fight inside the hotel. Mendoza-Cano is accused of choking and beating an acquaintance during the disturbance, and he was placed under arrest.

Again in the overnight hours, this time Sunday at 1:15AM, police observed a vehicle in the 700 block of east Dodge Street driving erratically and swerving left of center. Sean M. Edie, 47, of Fremont was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol when he showed signs of alcohol consumption upon police interview.

Later on Sunday, a man accidentally left his wallet on a checkout stand at a Fremont grocery store, and it was stolen by the next person in line. When the man returned to the store in an attempt to recover his wallet, it was gone. However, security footage showed Stephanie R. Matz, 25, of Fremont at the same checkout stand after the man left, and the footage also showed her taking his wallet. Matz was cited on suspicion of Theft by Unlawful Taking.

A few hours later, after 7PM, Kyle AJ Beebee, 33, of Fremont was cited on suspicion of 3rd Degree Assault following a disturbance complaint at a residence in the 200 block of west Jensen Street.  Beebee is accused of punching another man during an argument, resulting in minor injuries.

Lastly, on Sunday night, a hit-and-run accident ended in DUI and child abuse charges when Celedonio Gama-Garcia, 60, of Fremont struck a green 1998 Dodge Ram Pickup with his own vehicle, and fled without providing contact or insurance information.  A description of his car was shared with FPD patrol, and officers quickly found him in his car in the parking lot of a business in the 400 block of west 23rd Street.

Gama-Garcia showed signs of alcoholic impairment, and he was arrested on a DUI charge. He will also face charges of Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident and Child Abuse/Neglect, since he had two children under the age of 16 in the vehicle while he was driving impaired.
