FHS Names Athletes of the Year

FREMONT – Today Fremont High School recognized their Athletes of the Year, Juanita Mendoza and Cody Carlson.

The male athlete of the year is called the Roger Charter Award. Roger Charter was one of many outstanding athletes from the Class of 1973. Many of his classmates participated in two or more sports. Roger stands alone as the only athlete in Fremont High history to have participated in five different sports: Football, Wrestling, Cross-Country, Track and Baseball.

The summer after graduating from High School, Roger had both legs amputated as a result of a traffic accident, while he served as a highway flagman.

It is in the spirit of Roger’s love of sports and outstanding achievements that his friends and coaches have established this award in his honor.

Roger was a starting defensive end on the Big 10 Championship Football team; was the State Runner-Up @155# in Wrestling; qualified in four events for the State Track Meet; ran Cross-Country during his junior year, and took part in Midget and Legion Baseball for three years.

  1. To be given each year to the graduating Senior from FHS who best meets the qualifications of the award and competitive zest of Roger Charter.
  2. Award winner must participate in at least two varsity sports, his senior year; summer Legion Baseball may be counted as one of the sports.
  3. The FHS Coaching Staff shall serve as the election committee for this award.
  4. Consideration will be given to those who participate in more sports.

The female award is named the Outstanding FHS Female Athlete of the Year. Athletes need to be seniors and participate in two or more sports. This procedure is consistent with the boy’s selection of the Roger Charter Award for the Outstanding Male Athlete which is:

  1. Award winner must participate in at least two varsity sports in their senior year;
  2. The FHS Coaching Staff shall serve as the election committee for this award;
  3. Consideration will be given to those who participate in more sports.
