FREMONT – The City of Fremont is expanding its commitment to green solutions and renewable resources. In addition to the existing, operational solar power farm and the soon-to-open solar power farm #2, the City will purchase new electric hybrid vehicles.
At last night’s city council meeting, the council approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of five plug-in electric vehicles through the National Joint Powers Alliance, which creates national cooperative contract purchasing solutions on behalf of government, education and non-profit agencies nationwide.
The Kia Niro LX FWD plug-in electric vehicles are rare – really rare. Only six of this exact model exist in the entire world, and Fremont has purchased five of them. These state-of-the-art plug in hybrid vehicles can average 46 mpg when switching between electric and fuel powered modes.
As of today, the vehicles are sitting at a west coast port, waiting to make the trip home to Fremont, where they’ll help our city stay that much greener.
