FREMONT – The Red Cross is in need of blood donations, and several blood drives are planned over the next two weeks to help them meet the need for whole blood, platelets and “power red” donations.
A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Neg, B Neg, or O blood – all of which are in extremely high demand. All blood types are needed, however. All blood donors must:
- Be in good general health and feeling well
- Be at least 17-years-old
- Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18-years-old and younger and all high school donors. Click here for weight requirements for young donors.
Additionally, for “power red” donations, males should be at least 5’1 and weigh 130 lbs. Females should be at least 5’5 and weigh 150 lbs. The Red Cross also recommends that females wait until after age 19 to donate power reds. Higher standards may also apply – check with your donation center before signing up to donate power reds.
