Huskers open season by splitting first two games

HOUSTON — Nebraska had 14 hits Friday to beat Lamar 14-2 at the Lone Star Classic before falling to Texas Tech 15-10.

Nebraska pulled away from Lamar by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. All 11 were scored with two outs.

Lindsey Walljasper started the Husker run with a solo home run. Doubles from Bri Cassidy, Bree Boruff and Alyvia Simmons made it 9-2.

Cassidy led the Huskers going 3 for 3 with three doubles, tying a single-game Nebraska record. Walljasper drove in four runs, while Boruff also had three hits.

In Nebraska’s nightcap, the Huskers had a 7-5 lead against Texas Tech entering the fifth inning when the Red Raiders scored seven runs to pull ahead for good. Tech scored 13 runs in the final four innings.

Olivia Ferrell allowed six earned runs in the fifth.

Walljasper, Tristen Edwards and Kexey Kneib each finished with two RBIs against the Red Raiders. Walljasper and Cassidy each had three hits, while Boruff had two hits and scored twice.

Nebraska will face both teams again Saturday, playing Lamar at 11:30 and Texas Tech at 2 p.m.
